Key Facts:  Discovered the Metcalf claims in 1870 with the principle claim being the Little Anne. Robert was one of the first owners of the Longfellow Mine.

​

History:  Robert and James Metcalf were soldiers along with Joe Yankie and came to the area now known as Clifton-Morenci from New Mexico.  They traveled to this area in search of some renegade Indians and discovered copper in the area.  They returned later in the hopes of discovering gold with little luck but established the first mining claims in the area called the Longfellow, Arizona Central, and Metcalf.
