Dates:  Established as Metcalf in the 1890’s

 

Noted Aspects of Town:  Established as Metcalf in the 1890’s.  Stargo no longer exists and was consumed by the Morenci mining operation.  Today the name Stargo is used at the active Morenci mine for one of the dump-leaching sites.

Mine(s) supporting town:  Several underground mines were located in this area that eventually evolved into the current open pit Morenci mine.  One of the early mines was called the Stargo Mine discovered by Ignacio Campbell in 1890.  This mine was worked from 1907 to 1935.

 

What you will see today:  The open pit of the Morenci Mine which swallowed up the town.
