Looking down the ore shoot at the Unknown Mine

Unknown Mine - Mohave County

Where: Cerbat Montians near Gaddis Spring.  Other locations in the area include Stockton and the C.O.D. Mine

Travel Conditions: The first mile once leaving Stockton Hill road follows wash which is easily passable.  The road dead ends at a washed out area in the wash.  From this point requires a highly modified 4x4 to follow the old mine road.

Operation Dates:  Unknown

Description:  Elevation 4622 feet.

Not much is known about this mine location.  There is a small cabin and ore shoot at the location.

What you will see today: Today the small cabin has only one wall standing which has an old plywood door held on with hinges that can still be opened.  The rest of the structure is collapsed in on itself.  Just behind the cabin is the portal to the mine mostly covered with dirt.  The original wood entry way has given way to the elements.  A small opening is present above the collapse to view the entry way of the tunnel.  Dirt has accumulated in the entry way making it almost impassable.  It would be unwise to crawl into the entry due to the erosion and crumbling rock.  Some light from a shaft just above the mine could be seen inside the entry.  The shaft from above is about 15 feet deep opening into the tunnel.

A small wood structure is a short distance from the portal in a low area that I think was part of the support to get to the ore shoot on the side of the hill,  The ore shoot allowed material to be loaded into the shoot and travel a short distance down the hill to the road where it could be loaded into a transport vehicle.  The ore shoot is in good condition but showing its age.  It is not built with large timbers like most I have seen.  It is showing its age and will probably fall to the side within a few years.

There is a great view from the location on the top of the hill across the valley on the Northern side of Kingman.

Comments:  Difficult area to get to but has a great view of the valley and some old mining structure.  The operation looks to be small due to the remote location and the lighter duty ore shoot.
